Notes: Portage Lake is a moderately large lake which provides direct access to Lake Michigan. The lake has a maximum depth of 60 feet, however 65% of the lake is represented by shoal areas with depths less than 20 feet. Much of the lakeshore is privately owned, while 20-25% remains as undeveloped wetland (Michigan DNR 2000). The small town of Onekama is located on the northeast shore of the lake.
The lake is reported to host a large amount of boat (sail and motor) traffic due its Lake Michigan access. The lake also serves as the home waters to the Portage Lake (Portage Inn) Yacht Club, which is located on the western shore of the lake. Public boat access is provided by two lauches which are indicated on the following Google map.
