ABOUT THIS PAGE - The color of the launch ramps on the Google map gives a rough idea (based on DNR criteria) of the restrictions likely at that site. Green indicates that all-trailerable (<26') boats should be able to be launched. Note: This DNR determination is likely geared toward motorboats and not sailboats drafting over 3 feet. Yellow indicates only moderately sized center-board boats may be capable of launching, while red indicates more severe restrictions. Clicking on the indicators will give more info on the ramp and allow for directions to be obtained.

Lake Access & the DNR Passport

Most Michigan DNR ramps require access fees. These fees are waived for Michigan residents who have selected the Passport option during their vehicle license renewal. SailMichigan highly recommends this option. Out of state visitors can access these ramps for an $8 daily fee or a $29 annual fee. These "visitor passports" may be purchased at any state park or online.

Lake Type: Kettle / Glacial
Area: 760 acres
Lake Orient.: East-West
Max. Depth: 70 ft
Notes: Crystal Lake is a spring-fed, clean/clear lake with a sandy bottom. The lake is 70 foot deep at it's maximum, but is shallow on the lake shores and has one buoy-marked rock in the southeast section of the lake. The lake supports a mixed use of sail, power, and fishing activities from late March through late November.

Sailing on the lake is supported by the Crystal Sailing Club. Established in 1961, the CSC is a family centered working club which supports a Flying Scot fleet. The club is located on the North shore of the lake. The most common classes of sailboats found on the lake are Flying Scots, Sunfish, and some larger cruiser type boats (to about 25').  Public access to Crystal Lake can be made via a DNR boat launch, indicated on the following Google map.

Regarding lake traffic, the lake is quiet Sunday PM through Friday PM, moderately busy Saturday & Sunday AM and very busy on Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day Holidays. The best time to view sailing activities are during the Parade of Sails on July 4th, during Flying Scot fleet activities, and during Crystal Sailing Club functions as per their website.

Regarding the surrounding area, Crystal township is a full service township in Montcalm County, with campgrounds, convenience stores, 4 restaurants, bar, 3 parks, 2 gas stations, bank, hardware store, movie theatre, library, roller rink, and a race track.

The preceeding information was graciously provided by Mr. James Horak, Commodore of the Crystal Sailing Club.
