Lake Access & the DNR Passport

Most Michigan DNR ramps require access fees. These fees are waived for Michigan residents who have selected the Passport option during their vehicle license renewal. SailMichigan highly recommends this option. Out of state visitors can access these ramps for an $8 daily fee or a $31 annual fee. These annual "visitor passports" may be purchased online or at any state park.

Notes:

Lake Charlevoix, in northwest lower Michigan, is the fourth largest lake in the state by area and is bordered by the towns of Charlevoix (northwest end), Boyne City (southeast end) and East Jordan (South Arm). The lake connects, and provides access, to Lake Michgian via a channel extending through a neighboring small lake (Round lake).  The lake is accessed by seven public ramps and serves as the home waters for the Charlevoix Yacht Club and the Boyne City Yacht Club.  Both of these clubs have active racing schedules and host annual invitational regattas (see Events section).  By all accounts this is a wonderful sailing lake and a vacation destination in its own right.

Ramp A on the following Google map is approximately 1/2 mile north of the Boyne City - E. Grant Moore Municiple Marina (45.21645,-85.01665). This marina has the following amenities: water, electricity (30A), restrooms, showers, ice, fish cleaning station, long term parking, public phone, courtesy vehicle, dog run, day use dockage, playground/park, grills/picnic tables, wifi/internet. The marina can be reached at (231) 582-7361 (Mid May to Mid October) and on radio channel 16. Transient and seasonal slips are available.

Ramp D on the following Google map is adjacent to the East Jordan City Marina. This marina offers the following amenities: water, electricity (30A), restrooms, showers, gasoline, pump-out, ice, day use dockage, playground/park, grills/picnic tables, cable TV hook up. The marina can be reached at (231) 536-2166 (Mid May to Mid October) and on radio channel 9. Transient and seasonal slips are available.

Ramp F is a lauch area in Whiting Park (Eveline Township). It is unclear whether this is an actual ramp or unimproved access. Discussions are underway about establishing a small boat ramp at this site.

Ramp G is located in Young State Park. Young State Park is 563 acres and has several amenities, including swimming, fishing, camping, hiking and a picnic area. The boat launch appears to be located at the back end of the Terrace Campground which may mean that set-up and parking area may be limiting at the site.

Although a Michigan DNR bathymetry (depth) map is available for this lake, sailors are encouraged to download and use the navigational bookelet chart for this lake (see below).
