Crystal lake is an exceptionally clear, deep water lake located in Benzonia, Lake and Crystal Lake Townships in northwestern Benzie County. The lake is the 9th largest inland lake in Michigan by area and has an average depth of 70 feet with a maximum depth of 165 feet. This lake also serves as the home waters for the Crystal Lake Yacht Club, a family-friendly club promoting sailing instruction and competition. The club is located on the Western end of the lake.
Several public boat launches are currently known for this lake, although only 2 would likely be accomodating for larger boats. Ramp A is located at the end of Clark Street in the town of Beulah and it's location is indicated on the following Google map. The ramp receives a strong onshore breeze and does not provide a good location for rig set-up. Because of the onshore breeze, a trolling motor (or strong paddling) is recommend to clear the ramp. There is a small beach nearby for emergency beaching if needed. Parking is limited to available space along Lake Street .
Another, more extensive ramp facility has been built by the Michigan DNR. The new facility, indicated as "Ramp B" on the Google map, is located on the lake's southeast shore at 5572 Mollineaux Road (near M115) and opened in 2012. The launch has a 5 lane boat ramp with courtesy piers, a boardwalk, 56 paved parking spaces, and vault toilet facilities This facility will likely become the preferred launch ramp for sailboats based on size and wind direction.
Ramp locations C, D, E represent shallow, launch areas with very limited set-up area or parking. These may only be suitable for daggarboard or very small centerboard boats.
- Ramp "C" represents a very small launch at Lobb Road near South Shore Drive. Parking is extremely limited (i.e. 2 or 3 cars).
- Ramp "D" represents the Frankfort Public Beach and Boat Launch on South Shore Drive Bellows Avenue. Restroom and park facilities are also located at this site.
- Ramp "E" represents the North Shore Public access site near 7200 Crystal Drive (aka Zada Price County Park or Mitchell Park). Parking is located on the north side of the street. This should be considered for smaller boats only.
