New Safety Regulations for The Mac

In the wake of last year’s Chicago-to-Mackinac race, in which two crewmembers died in the capsize of the Kiwi 35 sport boat WingNuts during a severe nighttime storm, the Chicago Yacht Club has instituted a series of changes to try to ensure a similar accident doesn’t happen again. Among the biggest changes coming to the race is a required minimum stability index rating of 103 for all boats taking part. This rating is similar to a conventional limit of positive stability (LPS) number, but modified to reflect a boat’s length, beam and displacement, as well as features like the “wings” that played a role in WingNuts’s capsize.

In the first forecast for the summer boating season, Great Lakes water levels in the region will be similar to or slightly lower than 2011 marks, a report projects. Superior (1-3 inches higher) and Michigan and Huron (0-8 inches higher) are projected to start the boating season in May and June higher than last year, according to the monthly report by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Following a year of record precipitation in southeastern Michigan, Lakes St. Clair and Erie are projected to be 2-7 inches below last year's marks, but still near their long-term averages, the Corps said.
Bayview Mackinac Race makes changes in ratings system, safety

After several years of newer handicap rating systems, including last year that saw a slew of normally long-course boats defect to the shore course to sail under the PHRF system, the Bells Beer Bayview Mackinac Race is returning to the PHRF rating system for all classes. Also this year, host Bayview Yacht Club is making a couple of minor safety changes in the wake of WingNuts capsizing in last year's Chicago race, killing two Michigan sailors. This year, all sailors will be required to carry a knife that can be opened with one hand, and have a quick release tether with the quick release end attached to the sailor, not the boat. In addition to the better known football classic, the affiliated Sugar Bowl Sailing Regatta has been around just as long and is also considered to be a premiere event. The regatta was held on December 30 and 31 and was hosted by Tulane University and the Southern Yacht Club on Lake Pontchartrain. This ICSA intersectional regatta included teams from the University of Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Tulane, Texas A&M, University of Florida and The Ohio State University to name a few. After two days and 10 races, the Wolverines beat second place Georgia Tech by 1 point. The University of Wisconsin rounded out the top 3. Full regatta scores can be found on the Tech Score website.
Rains raise Great Lakes water levels, but lack of ice is a concern

Wet weather could push Great Lakes water levels up from last year, but some fear those gains could evaporate because of unseasonably warm weather. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released its six-month forecast Wednesday calling for above-average levels on the lakes St. Clair, Erie and Ontario. By February, levels could be way up in Lake St. Clair — nearly 20 inches because of last year's ice jam, said Keith Kompoltowicz, a corps meteorologist. That's good news for recreational boaters, but it could be short-lived. Some fear that gains from the region's second-wettest year in 131 years could be offset because it's almost January and the lakes still lack much ice. Temperatures in December were 3.6 degrees above average. For more of this article, click on the title above.2012

SailMichigan Collegiate Sailing Rankings - Nov. 14, 2011

The tabulated SailMichigan collegiate rankings for Midwest teams for Nov. 14 are below. These rankings reflect changes from the previous set due to the inclusion of results from the Timme Tune-Up regatta in Chicago. Unfortunately, data from the Team Race at Wisconsin (Nov. 5 & 6) could not be included as well, due to a lack of public availability of the scores. In addition, some teams excluded from the previous ranking have now been included because they have passed the 3 regatta threshold for inclusion. University of Illinois-Chicago makes its debut at position 4, while University of Chicago comes in at position 10. This week, Western Michigan slides below University of Minnesota, while Notre Dame slides up past Toledo. Overall, the top 5 have appeared to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack while the others have jockied up or down a few positions due to close scores. Nationally, Wisconsin is currently ranked 14th in the Coed rankings published by Sailing World as of November 10th. For more of this article, and the ratings, click on the title above.

Since our first attempt at a ranking of MCSA teams in early October, more regattas have been held and we have made tweaks to the ranking process. The first thing we realized is that regatta scores appear to change and show some variablility among the sources reporting them. In addition, some regatta scores are not publically posted, even weeks after the regatta was held. To be consistant, we will be primarily using those scores posted on the TechScore website http://scores.collegesailing.info/. This appears to be the only site where scores are posted and updated in a timely manner. For more of this article and the actual rankings, click on the title above.

US Sailing's long-awaited report on a Lake Michigan accident that killed two Chicago-to-Mackinac race sailors in July was released Saturday and faults the boat's design for the tragedy. The report says WingNuts, a Kiwi 35 sport boat with a very high amount of sail area relative to the boat's light weight, was not suited to races as long and unpredictable as the Mackinac race. Detroit Country Day is sailing right along in its first competitive season as a coed varsity sport in the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association. DCD recently participated in the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club Junior Olympics Regatta on Lake Michigan and came home with a number of medals. Salvatore Mancuso and Thomas Frikker captured first place in all five races in their two-person 420 boat. Reed Lorimer and Aidan Darby placed second overall while teammates Peter Hoglund and Charlotte Woods earned fourth-place medals. It was quite an impressive showing for DCD's young sailors who are competing against some of the best teams from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.
An attempt at ranking Midwest collegiate sailing teams

The ranking of U.S. collegiate sailing teams is not something that makes front page press or garners anticipation for future regatta match-ups. But is that due to a lake of interest in the sport or the lack of coverage of the ranking process? Currently, collegiate rankings are provided by Sailing World at sailingworld.com. In addition to reporting on collegiate sailing on a national level, Sailing World conducts a open coaches poll consisting of self-nominated coaches from U.S. collegiate programs. On a bi-weekly basis, the coaches supply their top 20 choices for co-ed teams and top 15 for women's teams. Interestingly, despite an active sailing schedule, Midwest teams are conspicuously underrepresented. The only MCSA (Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association) member currently ranked is Wisconsin (at Position 10 of the Oct. 13 Co-ed rankings). The rankings are typically dominated by Northeast U.S. teams. Click on the above title for more information and rankings.

The Charlevoix County Sheriff released his final report Friday on the death of two sailors in last summer’s Chicago to Mackinac race, saying blunt force trauma was the primary cause of death with drowning as a secondary cause. Sheriff Don Schneider’s 11-week investigation into the death of Mark Morley, 51, and Susan Makowski-Bickel, 40, found both victims sustained “tremendous trauma” to their face and heads, when Morley’s 35-foot Wingnuts capsized July 18 during 70 to 80 knot winds.
