Michigan High School Sailing

Twenty-five Michigan high schools offer the opportunity to compete in the sailing arena. These schools belong to the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association (MISSA), a division of the Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association (ISSA), and are governed by their policies. Schools. The schools compete throughout the Midwest (Sept.- Nov., May/June) in either 420s (for crewed events) or Lasers for single person events. The highest ranked Michigan team at the end of the Spring 2016 season was Grosse Pointe South High School, which was ranked 10th among 53 Midwest teams.

Unique Sailing Opportunity for At Risk TeenagersCutter Champion Mast

 

The Maritime Heritage Alliance (Traverse City) offers an experiential therapeutic program for at-risk teenagers (ages 13-19) in Northwest Michigan aboard their 39' cutter Champion.Their program includes four, day-long cruises which include individual and group therapy to build youth assets in psychological, environmental, and social functioning. Youth are referred to the program by governments, agencies, and families in the region. Referring sources may send a peer mentor (SAIL Champion graduate) or an adult mentor. For more information on the S.A.I.L. (Success Always Involves Learning) program visit www.sailchampion.org. In addtion, to help defray program costs, the cutter Champion is available for private charter opportunities. Contact Capt.
