About SailMichigan

As a recreational dinghy sailor, I developed SailMichigan in 2009 to promote sailing and support recreational sailors in and around the state of Michigan. I wanted to create a resource which would reduce the barriers to sailing and would enhance the likelihood of good sailing experiences. Accordingly, I focused on three areas; sailing resources, events, and qualified water access points. Regarding the latter, the centerpiece of the website is a searchable database of inland lakes, launches and harbors. The primary information for this database is derived from public sources (Michigan DNR) and is supplemented through user input and personal observations. As a disclaimer – Although the information provided by this site is believed to be correct, it is not warranted in any way. Any general information provided (including maps, gps coordinates, depths, lake information and ratings) are for guidance only and should be used with caution or verification through official sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I support SailMichigan?
Your visits and involvement in SailMichigan are very valuable and enhance the experience for everyone. In addition, you can help financially in indirect and direct ways. As an indirect way, please consider buying any Amazon books through us. If you were planning on such purchases anyway (for yourself or as gifts), buying through SailMichigan does not cost you anything, but brings us a small amount of revenue. These books can be found on several of our pages as well as at our Amazon store. As a more direct way, please consider advertising your business on SailMichigan. In addition, please support our other advertisers by visiting and patronizing those services (listed on the side and homepage banners). If you decide to purchase from them, please tell those businesses you saw them on SailMichigan.

How do I add or update my organization on your list?
Information or corrected information for non-profit organizations can be submitted through the Contact Us page and should include contact information for an organization representative.

How do I have a link placed on your website to my organization?
SailMichigan.org is happy to provide free links to non-profit sailing organizations and clubs. The link information can be submitted through the Contact Us page. Because website support is based in part on website traffic, we do request that a reciprocal link be placed on the requesting organization’s website which directs to www.sailmichigan.org. The link can be placed anywhere on the site which would be appropriate for such links.

Why can't I find a lake (that I know about) in your database?
SailMichigan is working hard to provide the most complete lake database possible. That being said, there are reasons why a "known" lake may be missing. The most likely reason is due to the size of the lake. SailMichigan only catalogs lakes 100 acres in size or larger. Although nearly 1000 lakes in Michigan meet that criteria, many more do not. The next likely reason is that there is no public access to the lake. Lakes without public access are harder to locate (unless you live on them) and are less interesting to the general trailer-sailor. As a service to their residential sailors, SailMichigan does try to include private lakes in the database, and indicates them as having 0 ramps. The last reason is that we may have simply missed the lake - PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE LAKE (see the FAQ below) and we'll make it right.

How do I suggest a new lake for your database or update information for an existing lake?
Please input new or updated information on Michigan lakes through the link provided on the lake search pages. Please note that only lakes with surface areas of > 100 acres are included in this database.

How do I secure advertising space on your Web site?
We offer many opportunities for sailing/boating organizations, sailing-related vendors and tourism-related businesses to reach interested customers. Please submit your inquiry through the Contact Us page to receive specific information.

How do I post information for a sailing regatta or event?
We are happy to post calendar information for sailing regattas (i.e. class events, invitationals, and charity-related), festivals or sailing-related events which are open to the general public. Please submit this information through the link provided on the Sailing Events page. We are unable to post events restricted to a specific organization (i.e. club member only meetings, regattas, or other restricted events)
