Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan, bordered by Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota, is the only Great Lake located entirely within the U.S. borders. Measuring 307 miles long and 118 miles across, it represents the third largest Great Lake by area, and the second largest Great Lake by volume. The lake has a maximum depth of 925 feet, an average depth of 279 feet, and features several bays; Grand Traverse Bay located on the northwest corner of the lower peninsula, and Green Bay, bordering Wisconsin. Lake Michigan is inseperable from, and drains into, Lake Huron through the Straits of Mackinac. Mackinac Island, located in the straits, is a popular tourist destination, and the ending point for two of the longest freshwater sailing races in the world (the Chicago-Mackinac and the Port Huron-Mackinac). Sailing on these waters is popular and governed by both state and federal authorities (see coast guard info on the right). In addition, commercial freighter traffic and weather conditions need to be carefully considered when planing an extended outing.
