Lake Type: River-fed / Lake Chain

Max. Depth: 68 ft
Notes:

Gun Lake is located within both Barry and Allegan counties and  is approximately 11 miles west of Hastings, 27 miles southeast of Grand Rapids, and 32 miles northeast of Kalamazoo. The lake is butterfly shaped and is reported to contain two large basins, of which the West basin is uniformly shallow with a maximum depth of 5 ft. with the exception of two deeper areas known as Robbin's Bay and Pickerel Cove (Joan Duffy, 1989 DNR survey).

Catamaran sailors gravitate to the west basin of the lake and craft with long centerboards to east basin where the water is deeper. Several islands and bays in the east basin make for some scenic sailing just be watchful of sandbars off some of the points and islands. This is a "warm" water lake and there is a nice swimming beach at the State Park and lots of things to do for non-sailors in the family. Modern toilets are available at the swimming beach and south picnic shelter but only vault type by the main launch site. Parking is unlimited if you include the unpaved lots nearby. Several restaurants, marinas, and convenience stores are located around the entire lake.

Of the three public (DNR) boat ramps identified for this lake, two are located in Barry county and one in Allegan county. The Barry county boat launches (A & B) are located within the Yankee Springs Recreational Area and are indicated on the following Google map. For additional access points, please see the Gun Lake listing under Allegan County.

January 27, 2011 - Boat: Hobie 16

Lots of coves and points to explore on slow days. Nice and shallow to right the boat on fast days.

The very insightful comments made by this user, regarding Gun Lake sailing, have been added to the general description above.

Access is available through the Yankee Springs campground, but the access is on a channel which requires paddling. The Yankee Springs basin of the lake has large shallow areas (stay well clear of the swimming areas). The Yellow Springs State Park is a good camping destination although not much else is in the immediate area. For those camping and sailing, the best non-sailing attraction is the Gilmore Car Museum (about 30 minutes away).
