Notes:

Located near Holland, Michigan, Lake Macatawa (and the surrounding area) appears to offer a variety of opportunities for the recreational sailor. The lake itself is approximately 6 miles long by 1.8 miles wide, and directly connects (via channel)  with Lake Michigan. The composition of the shoreline varies from residential/industrial (Holland), to high-end residential, to state park (Holland State Park). Although the maximal depth of the lake is 40 feet, much of the lake is less than 10 feet in depth.

This lake serves as the home waters for both the Bayshore Yacht Club and the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club. Established in 1955, the Bayshore Yacht Club has an active Wednesday night sailing race series. The Macatawa Bay Yacht Club is a historic yacht club (over 100 years old) and supports regular racing of multiple one-design fleets.

Several public access ramps to Lake Macatawa are available and are indicated on the following Google map.

  • Ramp A is a Holland township-owned launch located at Howard B. Dunton Park (270 Howard Avenue). This is a 4 lane (2 pier) hard surface ramp with ample parking. Ramp fees are $6 (resident) / $10 (non-resident) for a daily permit.
  • Ramp B is a Holland city-owed launch at Kollen Park located at 250 Kollen Park Drive and is along the Heinz Waterfront Walkway. Ramp use fees are $7 (daily) and $35 (seasonal) for this hard surface 4 lane (2 pier) facility. Click here for an information brochure on this ramp.
  • Ramp C is Macatawa Lake Public Access (DNR) facility at 1863 Ottawa Beach Road. The ramps are hard surfaced (6 lanes, 3 piers) with ample parking and are adjacent to several marine service companies and party stores.

January 27, 2011 - Boat: Hobie 16

Prevailing winds from the W. mean that novice sailers sailing on N/S course cross major traffic lanes from the channel to Lake Michigan. Busy but nice, some space to explore.

July 21, 2016 - Boat:

Anchorage Yacht Club in addition to Bayshore and Macatawa Bay Yacht Clubs
