Orchard Lake is a natural lake located in West Bloomfield township in south-central Oakland County. The Village of Orchard Lake surrounds the lake while the city of Pontiac is 3 miles to the northeast. The lake has an average depth of 23.1 feet and contains 3 islands, with Apple Island (33 acres) being the largest. Although many shoal areas (<10 feet deep) exist, there are two large basins located east and south of Apple Island. The former is 80 feet deep and the latter is 111 feet deep (MDNR, 1994). The lake is located among several similarily sized lakes with Cass Lake to the north, Upper Straits Lake to the west, and Pine Lake to the east.
Public boat access is available through a DNR launch located off of Orchard Lake Road, on the southwest side of the lake (see following Google map). The launch consists of 4 ramps with 2 interveniening short piers. The ramps discarge into a small lagoon attached to the lake.
The lake serves as the home waters for the Orchard Lake County Club. The club supports fleets of Lasers and "Y" class boats.

Apple Island creates some interesting wind shifts as you move around the lake. A long shallow shoal extends a distance into the lake on the South side of Apple Island which can create problems for fully deployed daggerboards. The launch opens into a small protected lagoon making it easier to dock even in heavy winds.
