Michigan Sailing Schools

In addition to many yacht clubs, which offer beginning sailing classes to their members and the public, there are several stand-alone organizations which offer sailing instruction in Michigan. These organizations generally fall into two groups: non-profit organizations or for-profit businesses. Both have their strengths. With some exceptions, non-profit organizations are generally community-based and offer small-boat sailing instruction to either kids and/or adults. Some also offer affordable membership plans which can provide the new learner with access to their fleet of dinghies. For profit businesses generally offer large boat (keel boat) learning opportunities, including opportunities to be certified for blue water cruising and bareboat chartering. Of course, these are not absolutes as there are some non-profit member-based organizations which support a keelboat fleet and some for-profits which provide daysailer courses.

Many sailing schools which operate in Michigan are listed below. A key has been provided which indicates the type of sailing courses offered: A = adult, Y = youth (generally 8-19), D = dinghy, K = keelboat, C = cruising. In addition some schools use instructors and programs certified by the American Sailing Association. The ASA promotes standardization and safety and companies which are ASA certified are required to meet certain standards. ASA certified programs below are highlighted.
